Hi, just wondering if anybody has come across this, went into my PP near work on way home yesterday as I have been doing for 15 years. Went up to place a bet when the woman said that head office had asked them to look for ID from me.
It's 35 years since I was asked for ID when trying to get into clubs etc.
Had no ID and was able to place the bet but was left bemused.

Anybody know what the story is, never tried to use card to make bets or dodgy notes and not had a dispute over a bet etc.

I've stopped betting with Paddy Power. First of all, they limited my gambling on their €20 max bet special offers down to €2.14. I wouldnt mind if I was constantly winning, but my hit rate was less than 1 in 7.

Then secondly, my online account was suspended until I sent them a copy of my passport. I had a phone/online account for over 12 years. Why they suddenly needed it now was baffling. It seems like they have no rhyme or reason.

    I bet with Betway now.

This is the reason. It is fairly common practice among firms. Money laundering is one of the main reasons. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Know_your_customer

Not sure if I should be offended or not:mad:

I wouldnt get offended it is only in the past 5 years that they are pushing this KYC stuff.
Bookies getting away with to much dodgy **** for to long and finally cleaning up their act to a small extent.

Presumably the €2.14 limit is online only?

I'm restricted with them online, but no issues ever in shops.

Yup. Bizarre as they were cleaning up because I rarely won. Asked to be reviewed and they just told me that it was the odd makers decision.

They simply want to know who you are imo. Have you been winning recently ? Do you specialise on certain sports/events or bad each way bets etc. If so, they are watching your bets and looking to put a name to the face imo

Like everyone, have good days and bad days. Had €300 on Liverpool to beat Utd:( but had €100 on Chelsea (-1) to beat Spurs at 7/2:D. Staff would know me by name

It's a bit of a box ticking exercise really on their behalf and they are covered if anything untoward were to happen. The cashier may also have been flirting with you :D

On a more serious note though and not directed at the OP I have never understood people getting upset etc. over having to verify age/identity etc. If you are a legitimate customer who is by the book then these checks are completely in your favour and are only a problem for the fraudster, I actually find it re-assuring that some conman wont be able to withdraw my money!

Maybe I'm just getting a bit cranky in my old age.
Closed my account with PP about 2 years ago, only cash over the counter now so no risk of fraud.

It's all part of their "anti money laundering" that they so now do that they don't have a repeat of the Wexford post man case... they do actually go as far as ask you for proof of income if continuously gambling in large amounts

Yep, there's no online bookie now who'll let you withdraw anything remotely significant without having gone through all the identity checks.

My worry is being asked in shop. I haven't heard that before, which is what happened to the OP.
Online with PP they don't give me BOG or any money back offers and restrict my bets to peanuts. Would be disaster if the shop decided to implement the same rules to me in person!

I got asked for iD for the first time yesterday in paddy power. She took my name down. They must be clamping down on winning punters like myself

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 96 ✭✭keng66

They never asked my name when I lost

    Would be impossible to implement

Interesting book - worth a read (doesn't reflect well on the bookies).

Paddy Power, communications director (?) of Paddy Power, phoned Tony O'Reilly, the An Post employee, to say that the Paddy Power system was down, and he could phone Paddy Power (the person) to place bets directly. Tony O'Reilly had won a six figure sum from them over the previous few days. A day later Paddy Power had recovered it all.

When Paddy Power (the company) e-mailed me my betting history (they got it wrong) they also attached the isnare spying software to their e-mail that downloaded on my PC when I opened their e-mail. Please do not tell me Paddy Power were trying to prevent money-laundering.

It was mentioned in the book that they looked up Tony O'Reilly's address on google maps expecting to see a big mansion but he lived in an average bungalow. They then just presumed then that he'd inherited loads of money and that was funding his gambling.

That was such a long time ago I'm sure they've changed their ways and look out for their customers now

Why would anyone bet with paddy Power??? Their prices are constantly awful.
Bet365 beat them nearly all the time in my exp

Surely everyone bets the best price available to them? And doesn't just blindly take loyalty to one bookmaker?

When money goes into Paddy Power, you do not hear a peep from them about money laundering or verifying your identity. It's only when you try to take money out that they pull the shutters down and force you to submit all manner of intrusive documents.

About a year back I tried to withdraw funds from one well known bookie with a fairly new account after a nice win. The withdrawal was cancelled and the money was credited back to my account while I verified my identity. While waiting for KYC, I placed a small bet out of boredom (which of course lost). If you are being forbidden from withdrawing money, you surely should be forbidden from placing any more bets. It's rotten really, to only use regulations when it's in their interest.

This concept of being allowed deposit immediately upon opening a new account but not withdraw with 95% of bookmakers is criminal imo.
There's no reason other than exploitation that this can't be changed.
KYC should be required first- and only once verified can transactions take place.

You are correct about Bet365. Cubomania 25/1, 16/1 elsewhere :D

Joking aside they (365) let me go through (lose) £25k sterling before closing me. Asked for P60 and proof of income and bank statements. I told them I won big sum that I had paid out in cash from a William Hills shop. They said where's the receipt !!! (Who gets a receipt in a bookies ?) So they closed me....

But out of the blue 6 weeks later they sent me an email saying I didn't need to satisfy them with any further info and opened my account again. And they'll take a monkey at Mahong valley without going to a trader, Laddies PP or Hills would refer for £50 !!!!

All just "box-ticking", satisfying the regulator. Shall we call it "the caring side of capitalism....".
