Hi, the wife and I are going to Amsterdam next week, it's been about 12 years since we were last there, we are not smokers but will probably have a funny smoke or 2 while there.

We have a fear of getting stopped by a gardai check point when we return and wanted to know has anyone been stopped by gardai and been drug tested and explained that you were in Amsterdam. I know more and more checkpoints are checking for alcohol and drugs etc so we just wanted to know were we stand if we do get tested, where do we stand? Thanks

Unless you are driving stoned or bringing drugs home, you will be grand. Noone is going to be testing you in the airport.

I think they mean for driving rather than at the airport, as they check for it in your system at checkpoints these days.

Unlike alcohol , cannibas will remain in your system for 4 - 6 weeks and if you are stopped and tested in that time it will be a positive result.

Yes, this is what I mean. We don't smoke, but it's just when your in Amsterdam you do the usual tourist stuff and I wouldn't want to be prosecuted for this if we happen to be tested after we return. I would imagine quite a few people have gone and comeback and had the same worry

Roadside checkpoint is supposed to be 8 hours after you last partake in illegal drugs, you should be good once you aren't stoned getting off the plane and then hopping into car to drive, don't smoke the day you are going home and you should be fine

Solid advice and I hope its stating the obvious that you would not be save or fit to drive if you smoked the same day, regardless of the legalities or chances of getting caught.

    Completely wrong. Way way off.

Cannabis* will remain in your system for up to several months Infact if you are a heavy and long term user. No chance of cannabis staying in your system for that length of time (at any remotely detectable levels) if you only smoke a few.

However, you would only need a few hours for it to be undetectable at a Garda checkpoint. They are testing intoxication above certain levels, they are not testing to see if you have a miniscule amount in your system from a joint you smoked 2 days beforehand. If that was the case very few would be able to drive. I read somewhere that 6 hours is recommended after your last use before driving. That obviously varied based on the amount you smoked and the frequency, however your scare mongering is completely unnecessary. If you don't know about the subject at hand, don't give advice.

That 6 hour figure is wrong. Independent testing of the Drager 5000 unit (which the Garda use) at a cut off of 10ng/ ml shows an occasional smoker will test positive below 12 hours and a regular below 21 hours.
It is best to wait 24 hours in all cases

INIS/customs don't care what you've had once you aren't carrying unconsumed drugs

It's a roadside checkpoint when driving is the issue though.

Don't drive for 24 hours. Easy rule to stick to.

Not relevant to travel. Illegal to drive with it in your system in the Netherlands too

That's harsh, and I'd definitely disagree.

I think we are using the same acceptable levels in the blood as in the Netherlands also.
