Nepotism alive and well?

So the other half went for an interview for a caretaker position advertised by the local school.
Was called for an interview in front of a panel of 3. Though it went well, it was short and sweet and he felt straight away they were just going through the motions and said so straight away afterwards to me.
Sure enough he received an unsuccessful email and subsequently asked for feedback but hasn't heard a reply back since.
Today I heard that the principals husband has started the job. Shocker....not.
Fair enough, he may have been more suitable for the job but I just question that. Considering 1 person on the panel is supposed to be independant, I'm wondering is it still a thing these days of "its not what you know, but who you know!"

I would rank it like this:

    1. It's who you know.

    2. It's how good you are at looking good, e.g. dress well, never come in late, appear like a reliable person. Think of Obama - an absolute scumbag who started more wars, legalised propaganda, locked up whistle blowers, etc., yet people really like him because he is great at looking good - nice suit, well spoken, good posture, appears reliable.

    3. You need to show you really want the job.

    4. Hard working. This doesn't mean you're the best, it just means you're reliable and hard working. Think of the guy who's always available to do overtime. Management love this.

    5. Competent.

I know some people will disagree with this. Probably some of the points can be switched around. But my general point is: yes, "what you know" will only get you so far.

It also depends on the company of course. So I'm just speaking generally.

Some people call it 'nepotism', others would call it networking. I'd much rather work with someone I knew who was less qualified, then some I don't know who is more qualified.

But why even waste peoples time with an interview if job is already given to someone known?

That's not on. I didn't realize that happened when I posted.

They have to carry out due process. It's very common un-official practice.

Its quite common, particularly in the education sector.

The job is already destined for someone. But they have to go through the sham of advertising it and interviewing for it. Its a legal requirement in the interests of transparency.

But yeh a lot of those public sector jobs are already destined for someone. And unfortunately there is no-one to appeal or report it to.

    A great country.
