The deal consists of 18 firm orders, plus options on a further 24 aircraft.
IAG says the B777-9s will be configured in a four-class layout, with a total of 325 seats, and will be used to replace 14 B747-400s and four B777-200s between 2022 and 2025.
The new aircraft will be powered by General Electric GE9X engines.

“The new B777-9 is the world’s most fuel efficient long-haul aircraft and will bring many benefits to British Airways’ fleet. It’s the ideal replacement for the Boeing 747 and its size and range will be an excellent fit for the airline’s existing network.
“This aircraft will provide further cost efficiencies and environmental benefits with fuel cost per seat improvements of 30 per cent compared to the Boeing 747. It also provides an enhanced passenger experience”.

The news comes as BA prepares to welcome the first of its Airbus A350 aircraft into the fleet this year, which will feature the carrier’s new Club World seat.

777X will basically be the largest widebody passenger jet now in production once A380 ends, am I right? Seems logical for 747 replacements. Particularly for operations out of LHR.

It also gets rid of the odd ball early 777-200's which have poor range/load vs the monster range/load of the ER/LR variants

Bad news for the second hand A380 market also. Speculation was that BA would opt for second hand A380's to replace the 747 fleet.

I dont think there was a real chance of that happening. WW talked about IAG taking on 2nd hand A380s “if the price was right”, but I think it was just a negotiating tactic.

Good to see BA embracing the B777-9. WW previously stated that they had missed the boat on the B777. The handful of B773s they got due to B787 delays showed them the potential that wasn’t there with the B772s they had in service. By then the order backlog was too much to consider it.

Do Rolls Royce not provide engines for the 777 any more? It must be disappointing to see such a big order to the UK "flag carrier" going to GE instead..

GE is the only engine for the in production 777's.
