Canada/USA ideas

Myself and my mum will be going to visit my sister in Toronto at the end of the summer for about three weeks. We are hoping to spend a week in and around Toronto with my sister and then travel around for the rest. There is also the potential to visit family in Minnesota if we wish.

We were thinking of doing a bit of a road trip but no quite sure where. I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions on routes to take , things to do/see, and what's doable/not doable in roughly 2 weeks. We are open to both US and Canada options (or both). I have never been to either countries so I'm a bit overwhelmed at where to start. I would love to include NYC somewhere in the trip but I'm not sure if that would be overdoing it.

Also wondering if hiring an RV/Motorhome would be a good idea or if getting a car and staying in motels/camping would be better?

I'd be skipping Minnesota (not a problem with it but it's half way across the USA from Toronto).

I'd drive an ordinary car from Toronto to Montreal for a couple of days, then drive down into Vermont - Burlington VT, Manchester VT, and then into Boston for a few days before finishing off in New York City.

Others will have entirely different ideas! I did this drive so I am biased!
About 20 hours driving which is a few days driving at a relaxed pace, i.e. staying in each place a couple of days and chilling. Vermont is gorgeous.

(map above only an outline, you'd take more scenic roads than the main ones)

Did you encounter may issues with crossing the border with the rental car? I'm just wondering in terms of fees if the one way/cross border fee was much?

Make sure the hire company know you intend crossing the border. Make sure your insurance cover covers crossing the border as well. We got pulled over by the police in Montana and they had a good look at our rental agreement so keep it handy. I seem to remember when looking to rent that that picking up a car in one city and returning it in another city was costly as well. This was a few years ago so memories are a bit hazy on it.

Yeah this is what I'm concerned about. If the fee was much I think we would probably rather just do a loop

We ended up doing a loop in the end. It saved us a good bit of money.

Yeah we're thinking of doing a loop between Toronto - Muskoka and Montreal instead of the US idea as its just logistically easier it seems

So if anyone has any suggestions for along that route I would love to hear. Particularly for Muskoka and Algonquinn park!
