I failed the NCT on front brake imbalance.

Do they just test the front brakes or do they do a full brake retest?

Are you planning on breaking the rear for parts?

Just curious is all. Seems odd if they do a full brake retest when back and hand brake past last time.

...they test whatever failed the previous time. If their is a failure which is blocking the testing of any item the first time then that item will also be tested.

Retests generally can be far quicker than the initial full test.

Some retests simply involving a visual inspection by the front yard road marshal do not incur the retest charge and are even quicker to carry out and a second appointment does not need to be booked, you simply roll up at any time for these visual retests.

For example in Fonthill test centre I could go across the road to Atlas tyres, get bulbs, tyres etc fixed and return in a matter of an hour, do the visual test and be on my way with a full pass.

Nowadays it is vital to arrange and get the test done in enough time to rectify and faults detected esp at CHRISTMAS time when the garages are manically busy or on holidays.

The Gadaí Siciní can now seize cars with out -of- date NCT's and there is no grace periods any more. In theory a booked test and intention to retest MIGHT get you off but you are not guaranteed to be let drive on if you meet the wrong officer. Keep test results and proof of re-booking and intention to repair in your car ready to produce for the inquiring guard and you MIGHT be let off.

Tests can be done up to three months before expiry and gives you enough time to rectify any faults occurring.

My opinion would be not to carry passengers if your car's NCT is slightly out of date, awaiting repairs and NOT to park in a public space, like motor tax I think traffic wardens can book for out of date NCT's and out of date/no insurance disc displayed. I was done for no insurance disc ,parking in a public parking space, on a newly bought car on the day of purchase while the new insurance disc was in the post.....no mercy there.

A guard might not be happy, for example to see a parent carrying a load of passengers in an NCT failed car and might opt for seizure and transportation to the car pound.

The devil is in the detail and they ARE all out to get you. I find the NCT crowd are very helpful, flexible and cooperative in helping motorists comply with the law and likewise the motor tax and licensing crowd react very fast to applications, no long queues like one time, all online now.

The flies in the ointment are the guards and especially the parking wardens always on the prowl making money.

Top of the list are private clampers in private parking spaces who deserve a place in Dante's seventh circle of hell........extortionate vampires all.

Fist you need to understand why brakes are imbalance. It does not mean the brakes are worn out. There can be many thing like rust, water on brake fluid, air pocket, no grease on right place, bad installation or bad parts. Warp disc can too cause imbalance on little scale. Easiest thing is to check the caliper movement. It must able to move by hand.
