On my fifth provisional, can I go back and do theory?

    Hi all

I do not know how to drive. Have my theory test done about ten years ago. My fifth learner permit is expired since last June and if I book a test I can get another year long license.

However I’d prefer to just sit my theory again (as I’ve forgotten most of it) and have two years to learn. I think it’ll take me longer due to disability and a general fear of driving. Going for an automatic this time to try and make the challenge a bit easier. Can I book a theory test and do it this way or do I have to fail a test/book a test to get my learner permit back?

Your learner permit must be expired over 5 years before you must do another theory test.

You will only get a one year permit if you just have evidence you have applied for a test, you have to have sat and failed a test to get a two year permit.

I wouldn't bother worrying about the theory test- you can get the test book and CD in most bookshops if you want, but I think just getting the Rules of the Road book and going over everything in that, plus the sample questions your instructor will give you once you start lessons, is enough.

I have a learner permit and never did a theory test :o and I find the RSA Rules of the Road to be enough theory if you actually thoroughly read and study it.
