UK import

What's to stop people buying a car in the UK and driving it here on UK tax and insurance? I know the VRT police want cars with UK regs to show proof they haven't been in the country for more than 3 months. But especially when VRT is so high, it would be far cheaper to just ferry to UK every few months and have a little holiday before coming back with fresh paperwork.
    Have I missed something?

Well the first issue would be getting UK insurance without a UK address. You also can't register the car in the UK without a UK address to send the new V5C. And if you did get caught by Revenue, you're in a world of pain.

VRT isn't considerably high unless you're buying a car worth 20k+

Don't people rent out addresses or something these days?

Actually I'm thinking what problems are going to arise out of Brexit.
Ferry will probably stay the same price
Cost of VRT might rise and added import taxes
Maybe they will get more strict with vrt policing. Who knows.
