Cost for front wishbone, ball joint and brake pads/discs

    Hi

    I got tracking done on my wheels today and on the report there were comments on it;

    1. Front wishbone worn and small play on ball joint

    2. Front brake pads and discs needed soon 15% left

The cost for brake pads and discs was €230 but no price to replace front wishbone and ball joint. I called my local garage who said they would charge €500 for everything including 4 hours labour.

Is this a fair price or do I need to look around? Will the tracking need to be re-done?

My car is 2010 hyundai ix20

    Thanks!

In fairness, it probably just needs replacement Brake Pads in the coming months.
If you want you could get any small garage to check the relevant Ball-joint for wear for your own peace of mind.

edit. Practically all Ball joints will exhibit a 'clonking' noise over Bumps (or when turning) when they are on the way out.

ps. If there was wear on a ball joint they coudn't possibly Track it accurately, and should have told you this at the time.....just further evidence of the ineptitude of this particular crowd.

    Front pads (4pcs) 30eur
    Front discs(2pcs) 70eur
    Front brakes hardware 5eur
    Rear pads (4pcs) 20eur
    Rear discs(2pcs) 50eur
    Rear brakes hardware 5eur

Track control arm (outside, bottom) 50eur
    Ball joint (outside, bottom) 10eur

500eur is bit too much. I did not selected the cheapest or noname parts

That is fantastic car, no load of parts variations. Typically I ask the vin to compare the suitable parts.
Estimated labor about 2 hours, not over 3

Thanks i don't have the car that long but i am enjoying so far, lovely to drive (I had a yaris before it so big improvement)

I was thinking 500euro was a bit pricey but then again I don't know much about the price of parts! So you think 2 hours all in for brakes, ball joint and wishbone and about 350euro with labour is reasonable? I will be checking my local garage on monday see what they quote! Thanks for your reply

I was surprised to hear I needed that work done to be honest as I don't hear any noises when turning etc! Also surprised my brakes need to be done as they are quite responsive and don't require alot of pressure to break. I think I might be best getting my local garage to check and see what they think. Thanks for reply!

350eur are much reasonable price. If they all like to screw you, just pm to me.

To check the suspension, rise the car by jack wheel by wheel. Try to shake the wheel by 3/9 and 12/6 oclock. If you do not feel the movement, it is ok. True, wheel by wheel you do not wheel the roll bar issues, but you did not had it that type of problem. If you have a trolley jack and can lift entire axle then you can feel any suspension problem (if there are problem). There is always possibility, they seen visually the bad shape rubber parts and suggest to replace the parts. It does not mean the parts are currently bad but soon will.

    Agree completely here.
Get all the stuff checked in another garage before you go any further.

If there was an issue with a ball joint the tracking shouldnt have been done.

There are several threads about that nationwide chain.
On one of them a lad rung up to get an oil change done.
They recommended over the phone the front discs and pads needed to be done too.
Regarding the wear on the discs n pads.
I was told by a main dealer there was 15% left on my discs n pads.
25k miles later i changed them and there was still life in them

The brakes life spans depends how hard you using them. If you brake hard and warp the disc, then you are screwed. The best suggestion to save the brakes, do not tailgate and look ahead.

I wasn't expecting anything to be wrong with the car I only bought it a few months ago. I'll definitely be getting it checked by another garage anyway! They were saying I should be looking to get discs and pads done ASAP within a month. I find it hard to believe as I'm not hard on them and they seem perfect to me

Are you able to send any links over about those threads would love to have a read!:)

I don't use them hard at all or tailgate I'm a sensible lady driver :)

I use to go to the tyre/exhaust type places to get work done but now I never. You save a fortune going elsewhere. My partners Hyundai had sticky rear calipers last year and those stupid centers quoted 500 to replace the rear calipers with disks and pads. They sad they cannot be freed up because they are sticking too much, utter nonsense i went to a regular garage out by sandyford and got the calipers freed up and new pads put on. That's all it needed and he charged me 100....

Do you know why the brakes can stuck? The bad installation
Every brake system what have a replaceable hardware, needs the new hardware on every single time. Even if it looks little shiny (the stainless steel) it does not work anymore properly. Also the brakes needs the little bit grease under the hardware. If they keep using the old hardware, your brakes does not works properly.

The calipers have a repair kits what cost very little money compared the full unit. Yes I know the local market does not have these, just bad parts selection. If you need the caliper repair kit, pm to me

Brake disc replacement seems to be a cashcow for some garages, my nephew bought a sh passat off a VW main dealer last year , he brought it in for an oil change a few months later and got a call to say the brakes were in a dangerous condition, 80% worn, and would they change the front discs and pads, he declined the offer and said he would change them himself, he checked them and found them fine, brought the car in recently for another oil service and asked them to check the brakes, they said they were perfect, when he quizzed the service manager he got highly offended.
