Officially importing slurry from neighbour

    Situation is like this:

    * We’re relatively lowly stocked with just sheep at the moment
    * Neighbour is milking cows and highly stocked, under pressure with nitrates

Can we officially take some of his slurry and spread it on our place without leasing the land to him?

Is there some form to fill out to inform the Dept and then he’s covered for nitrates, cross compliance, etc.?

Yes, best talk to an agri advisor, add up your nitrates first, then use surplus quota to import.

You'll probably need soil samples done as well to show you are index 1 or 2 for P.

If the seat's wet, sit on yer hat, a cool head is better than a wet ar5e.

May sure it's done right. Know of a person that imported slurry, no forms filled. Caused a lot of headaches. All by the book this year. I think a teagasc advisor was involved in the process.

Be worse if forms were filled and no slurry spread.

    How did it cause headaches?

Was getting pig slurry off the books last couple of years but the boss of the pig unit told me the dept of ag have hired a load of staff and are clamping down on this practice this year. So I’m sticking to my correct allocation this year which isn’t much but not worth the risk.!

Pig farmer near me has a long list of farmer listed for importing slurry. If Dept want to talk to a few of them they'd have to go to the local graveyard. I take slurry off a few lads who are in derogation. All signed for. Had one lad call me 12 months ago wanting me to sign off on an artic load of CAN because he got his figures wrong. He ended up getting coop to" bury "it. Some lads are poisoning ground with bag stuff.

A guy near us was importing slurry from a big local dairy farmer into sixty acres of bog land with a six foot gate into it as only access. Got a visit from the department about this and were looking for dates of spreading and receipts for contractor. Then got a inspection for the land and got knocked for no farming activity on the land and lost bps payment on it and the dairy farmer got done for nitrates penalty for over stocking.

Is there an official form to fill out and someplace in the BPS online you need to complete? Or do you just need to keep track of dates, amounts, etc.?

We’d be talking about 7 acres here and no more than a few thousand gallons of slurry. The neighbour needs the paperwork side of it more than anything else.

Make sure he only spreads with your approval, don't allow him in bad weather.
Some seem to just bulldoze in

I get some slurry from a neighbour, same situation as you...

I couldn’t find the form on the dept site, but this is the form, although I think it’s a 2011 version. But the 2018 one I have filled out looks to be the same...

Ag adviser fills it out, and both farmers sign...
As someone else said - you’d need to work out your limits first, and see what you could take...

    Thanks folks.

Once again the KT discussions on boards.ie deliver!

It'd be great if some of the official KT schemes could capture the value of boards.ie and other online discussions.

I can't credit it tbh. We first got shut out of local piggery 15 years ago. They soil sampled our place and told us we were out for 12 months. P index was too high. We're exporting at this stage and no one around here will sign forms without getting slurry. Contractor spent 2 days a the week before last hauling to a tillage farming neighbour.

How do you think all this grass is growing for all these cows!

The lads in derogation who have to export slurry must get forms filled and must be sent into Johnstown Castle by end of December every yr. Forms record slurry that was imported in previous 12 months. Nutrient content is worked out in total kgs and volume of slurry supplied is in cu mts.
That said I've got slurry from lads down the yrs that was little more than coloured water. Nutrient content was nothing like what was on paper.
Its a box ticking paper exercise to keep the green lobby in Europe happy.

The dogs on the street are well aware of that...the Dept must be turning a blind eye or just couldn’t be ars*d.

There’s a lot more than the greens to keep happy.

It used to be, but not anymore. Things have tightened up a lot since ppl in GLAS had to do a NMP, take samples etc. and found out due to higher than expected P levels there is a huge segment of farmland no longer available to take slurry.

Just back from an under 16s girls soccer game. We were playing a team from Dublin. They spent the whole game complaining about the smell of slurry, they lost too

This export/import of slurry can turn into a me me me farce. Some will take the piss.
Overstocked run to someone to bail them out offer them the slurry. When the time comes they cant it draw themselves. Contractor is brought in. Who pays him? You might get coloured water on the day. Then the farmer comes back in march or april expecting to get the grass off it for silage.
