I just read an article on the Newstalk website that says this year there will be more sites than ever going green for Patrick's Day, including Victoria Falls.

It's great that for such a small nation we have such recognition around the world!

Do you think it's great or is it all a bit of a sham :D

It's called marketing. A lot of people think the Sydney opera house went green a few years ago voluntarily which started this trend. Tourism Ireland paid the NSW goverment to light it up. Paddys day is one of our biggest marketing tools and for once our government has got something right by utilising it.

Where is the government sticking its tool?

It's been advertised since the film "the fugitive"

Richard Kimble uses a Paddy's day parade to evade capture and .....ahm......... promote Ireland.......

A sham being something that isn't what its meant to be? Its meant to promote and celebrate Ireland and Irishness, so from that point of view its no sham.

But is it tacky? Hell yes, but it as described above, solid gold. It is a disproportionate world wide annual marketing day that all other smaller nations would sell their first born for. Its up there with Chinese New Year and the 4th of July and when you compare the scale, thats astonishing.

The timing of Paddy's Day this year could be the most important in history.

When you think about it, the fact that our national day is marked around the world is rather astonishing.

As a small island country at the Western edge of Europe we really punch well above our weight.

    Why, 17th & 18th March.

Christ im a naive bastard.you mean the Irish government pay these places around the world to make their monuments/buildings green?
Really ? I thought they did it for the love of all things Irish.

    Why, 17th & 18th March.

10 days before Brexit day, perhaps disastrous Brexit day, Ireland gets a shop window to the World, to raise awareness, goodwill, support, discussion etc.

Who knows, it might even be the catalyst to demonstrate to the deluded Brexiteers that Ireland is not going to be thrown under any buses at the 11th hour and that they ought to start sweating soon.

I spend it sitting on a riverbank fishing, far away from the maddening crowds and drunken idiocy

It's a day off and get to have a few bottles where I'd otherwise be working. I'm all for it.

I'm sure most of the 'look how modern and progressive I am' brigade are dead against it. What's new

Same here. Myself and the girl go fishing. She loves being down in some quiet spot by the river helping me with my rod

I usually volunteer to work, on a public holiday I get double money for the same amount of hours worked so it's a good deal for me.

There is nothing wrong with a party but I am not a fan of waiting in a queue to get a beer.
