Following up on a a previous post.

Issue with the wheel cog light and limp mode on my 2008 1.6 TDCI . Car electrician thinks it needs a replacement ECU.

Can anyone on here tell me if the codes on the ECU have to be an "exact" match to work?

Finding it hard to find exact same code number.

There is generally a range of numbers that will work, however the ECU will have to be rematched, vin transferred and keys re programmed to the PATS system for the car to run again. It's not plug and play

Is that something a motor electrician can do?
Hmm, I see a lot on ebay claiming "plug and play"

It depends if they have the right diagnostic tools, some may be able to.
If you get GEM unit and instrument cluster and swap them all them its plug and play, or else if you send your old ecu off and the company swaps your eeprom chip over to a new ecu then it will also be plug and play but both those options would cost more and wouldn't be the 'norm'

I have been able to source a few ECU's but I cant seem to get an answer on whether the codes need to be the "Exact" match.

For example, this is the ECU that cam out of my car. The code number is 8YLB.
There is a local breaker who has one but the last character of the code is a different letter (8YL"").
Do you know if this will work in my car?

Part is €100 so I want to be certain before I buy it!
