Which hatchback?

I've been looking at changing cars for a bit now, and looking for some advice/experience for a hatchback that isn't boring to death but is still easy enough to insure (young driver with 4 years NCB).

Must be petrol as only doing small mileage weekly, but do the odd few runs to Belfast and Cork for work, but not regularly enough to warrant a bigger car any more.

Been looking at either a 2013 Golf with the 110bhp 1.2tsi, or a 2014 Focus with the 100ps 1l ecoboost.

Anyone any experience with either, or things to look out for? Also been looking at i30s or even maybe a Lexus CT200H, but no experience with either so not sure what they're like.

Budget is roughly 12k.

If you're considering the Civic, in that budget you can get the highest spec 1.8 Litre EX GT petrol model(140bhp) in the UK. It's what I have and it's a cracking car. Full Leather, Sat Nav, Panoramic sunroof and the sound system is pretty good too.

Should be pretty Insurable too, check with Liberty for quotes. Mine was €880 full comp with my mam as named driver under me 1 years NCB in own name.

Anyone have any experience or opinions on the 1.6 VVTI Auris? 132bhp and isn't bad looking

It’s the same engine as the Avensis. The Auris is a good car, there are a few messy bits on the dashboard but overall there’s not much wrong with them, and the engine will be far less likely to need work than a TSI or Ecoboost.

Cheers, yeah I know it's not the most exciting and is probably a bit more sluggish, but an NA engine vs the likes of the golf or focus is enticing.
