    Can you go commercial?

Land ruiser would be my shout, proper 4-wheel drive

Most crossovers have AWD(all wheel drive) which if trying to pull a trailer out of a wet field you would will at it a while

Boring stuff here, but you need to look at the weight the horse box is rated for and ensure the car and your licence is suitable.

Yep limited enough selection that can legally tow a horsebox. A friend of one got the new fiat pickup lately and loves it.

Toyota diesel would be good choice, I wouldn’t go with Mazda

What load is the trailer as you need to check what vehicle will support it as listed above

Braked weight of 1.5-1.7 t. The above all capable of 2t braked.

Is there much difference between 2 and 2.2lt 4wd rav's? Newer versions appear to have awd.

Is it for pulling on roads or could you end up in muddy fields?

    Just road.

For example a Kuga has a GVW of 2100, add a trailer with a MAM of 1700kg and you’re beyond 3500kg

    What licence do you have.

    Just road.

No real need 4wd so. But might end up in one due to towing.

As above towing capacity most important for legalities.

I'd not bother with kuga myself.
2t is tough on them. Have noticed clutch slip a bit in mine under towing. It's grand with a trailer and a ton but struggles a bit beyond this.

Personally if I was regularly towing I'd be looking at proper SUV or crewcab.
2.5 litre diesel and above in an auto.

    Landcruiser, hilux, amorak etc
