Considering a VW Tiguan

    Hi,

I have been driving a 03 diesel Passat for about 7 years and have always been very happy with it. It never gave me any trouble (one alternator issue aside), was comfortable, had enough power and was not expensive to run. The time has come to change it and I am considering a Tiguan - probably 2014 or thereabouts as much budget will be around 12k. I am leaning towards a crossover type car because I have a second child on the way and like the idea of the space and the height and I want to make sure I have a good sized boot. I don't want to get a Qashqai as they are everywhere and a lot of the other crossovers I see around the place are relatively new so there aren't any within my budget.

So the Tiguan seems right to me - does anyone have any thoughts, alternatives or advice on this?

Tiguan is lovely, I had option of Tiguan or Qashqai and picked the Qashqai, regretted it every day...

One thing to note, the boot on most of these Crossovers are not huge. Take a large double buggie and it will fill it up......you might have a bigger boot on the Passat

my Octavia boot is much bigger than our 131 tiguan. quite a lot of body roll compared to a saloon.

I heard a good few people saying that the boots in crossovers are not big but I thought the Tiguan had a decent size. Hmm, food for thought. I'll have to go have a look at one soon.

It's decent but not huge....of course a roof rack and box are a good option

We have an 08 one and had a 2010 before (long story).

Some have abaolutely no options at all so make sure what specs you are getting.

2 kids in make it very cramped. Boot is not big, one buggy fills it up and you have to go up instead of horizontally loaded. Parcel shelf needs to come out.

Fantastic car reliability wise and decent power. We have a 4x4 one so mental tax bur worth it on mountains.

You need good tires, road noise isnt great

I have an e60, boot is massive in comparison

Premium price over other options and Irish models are specced pitifully. I would venture that if its your family car and you have two kids the boot is too small.

A 2014 would be the first gen Tiguan which was only marginally larger than a Golf. If you really need the space and are stuck to that kind of age then an Octavia estate would be better. The newer Tiguan is a good bit bigger in and out, and far better specced, but they didn't come around till 2016.

I'd disagree with comparing it to a golf.

I'm using a 2012 110bhp 2wd as a part time taxi and get a lot of positive comments about the room inside. I'm 6ft 4 and have the seat almost all the way back. My wife is 5ft 5 and she love it also.

Current 270k kms. Bought it with 220kms in late 2017. Put a Dual mass clutch/flywheel in around 240k for a grand and the clock spring mechanism that is part of the airbag.hord/steering wheel controls at 260k for near 600 quid.

Does a genuine 40mpg for city driving but need a motorway run for every tank of diesel or the DPF ligh tcomes on and then you need to go for a 15km motorway spin to clear it or else you're heading for limp mode and trip to mechanic for a forced DPF (only happened once since i owned it), but if you're going for regular heavy/standing traffic or sub 15k journeys then maybe steer clear of diesel.

Mine is the lowish spec "trend and fun" model but has the park assist. I'm pretty happy with it.

Put new tryes on 3 weeks back.

    Bridgestone A005 allseasons, 235/55/17 @ €780 fitted
