I know that there are hundreds of threads &advice on importing fro uk. But I'm short of time. I'm collecting a car being delivered to East midlands airport, but dealer refuses to tax car. If I call to a Post Office can I take out road fund tax? What is involved? Can I get it over the counter? What documents do I need, proof of identity?.
Slow to chance driving without it. Any advice, help, oradvising on where to look for answers much appreciated.
    Thanks.

Just drive to the ferry, you’ll be fine. In the very unlikely event you’re stopped, just show them the receipt and tell them you’re on the way to the boat.

Depending on how long the car is out of tax, you might get away with it. I bring cars in regularly and the cops have tightened up on the tax situation. Last 2 I brought in, I was stopped by motorway police when it flagged on their anpr. On both occasions I had just taxed it online (very easy to do, much easier and cheaper than over here..)before leaving for the ferry.

My advice is, if buying private and the current owner has it taxed then drive on as it will take a while for the ANPR database to update itself and the car won’t show up as untaxed until the change of ownership goes through. Bit if buying from a garage, you can check online if a car is taxed ( don’t have the website to hand but it’s a government site so easy enough found) if it shows up there as taxed drive on but if it shows as untaxed, tax it for the sake of a few quid.

You might not get stopped at all but you will have peace of mind if you do.. Not all cops are as sound as you might expect and you have a few hours of motorway driving from East Midlands to the ferry so better safe than sound..

Jesus, did you even bother to read the OP before advising?

It is quite easy to tax the car yourself on the DVLA website and I advise doing so considering the low cost. I brought a car back earlier this year, taxed it online at the dealers, you need a reference number off the V5 form. Cost £20 for years tax. Drove from just outside London to Holyhead but wasn't stopped by the Police even though it should have showed untaxed on APNR. But I had peace of mind knowing that if I was stopped I had online receipt of tax paid. You can also claim some of the tax paid when you get back to Ireland....I haven't done so yet.

Copy and paste job. didn't have the time to take out the irrelevant bits. Both scenarios covered though :)

Thanks for taking the time to reply. It was most welcome.
Did as you suggested and made ferry no problem.
    Much appreciated
