Hi guys hope ye can help me out I have just put a deposit on a 2016 1.2 petrol Quashqai currently have a 2010 1.6 petrol focus

Reason for change want to save on tax and fuel and 1 toddler 1 due in 8 weeks so looking for a higher up car.

My question is I don’t drive much I would say even less than 5000km per year all short journeys very rare I drive far ...have I made the right decision going with petrol over diesel and will I save a bit each week on fuel...currently spend about €30 per week.

You'd wreck a diesel, petrol all the way.

The 1.2 is a decent unit for power, it’s not a rocket but not sluggish either. 8-9L/100 with city driving really is what you can expect. Probably not as economical as many would think but you completely made the right decision not going for a diesel.

If your happy to change and wanted a bigger car then that's good enough reason to change. If you however think spending €10,000 plus to save €300 a year road tax is a good idea I think you should know the answer. Old car tax €570 new €270 p.a. Fuel economy will be very similar on both. At less than 5000km a yr that's only 10 fills or less a year. You'll save €25 a month on road tax but. Pay c. €200pm on repayments. Net effect you'll be €175 a month worse off.

She wants the higher position and extra space for a new baby.

Yeah but you gotta sell it to yourself that it’s a sound economic choice too!

Would the difference going from a 1.6 to a 1.2 not save even €10 per week in fuel I thought that was the point of a smaller engine that it would take less fuel

I thought it was clear I'm addressing the issue with the comments about motor tax and fuel savings. No issues if he just wants to change for other reasons but the saving on fuel with that little milage will be tiny if any.
    .
Real mpg stats Qashqai 1.2 = 36.5 average

    Focus 1.6 petrol =35.8 mpg

Agreed, loading kids into a Qashqai is an awful lot easier than a Focus.

Not really the Qashqai won't be as aerodynamic as the focus as it sits a lot higher and has a lot more drag. We had a diesel one for 3 years, fine car and ideal for loading small kids. So served that purpose well. Boot space is small mind you. So once kids could load themselves we went back to a saloon. Buggies had to be put on their side to fit in. Holidays etc. we really struggled with suit cases.

at 0.8 MPG better than focus on economy the 3000miles/5000km a year won't save much.Rough Calc the Qashqai is 2% more efficient on fuel so you'll save 60 cent a week. That's a saving of €31 a year plus the tax saving of €300. I'm not trying to burst you bubble but just so you know the expected fuel savings as you did ask. Petrol is the correct choice. They are a nice car to drive in fairness for a crossover, and are comfortable too. Enjoy your purchase.
