Failed NCT - Contaminated brake disc

Just wondering what would contaminate a brake disc? That same wheel had a caliper replaced a few weeks ago and it was likely the disc overheaded.
At that time I replaced the caliper but the mechanic said the disc was fine. Would overheating have resulted in contamination of the disc?

The disc on other side of axle is quite new and not very worn. Should I replace both discs to be on the safe side?

You should change both at the same time on each axle.

if one side shows more wear than the other then they should be replaced as a pair anyway!

Both sides appear to be the same wear wise but the NCT report says one side is contaminated. I'm just not clear what could have contaminted one disc. I suppose I should have questioned the tester more?

Had this recently, outside of disc looked fine but the inside was rusted and not making full contact. Only solution is the have the discs machined or replace them. Replace in pairs with new pads.
