I am out of the country most of 2018. Car was not in use. My tax was out in July 2018. My insurance ran out in Oct 2018. Do I need to pay tax since July 2018 if I want to sell the car? When you pay motor tax online you also need to give insurance details but I probably can give the policy which has lapsed as was still in force in July 2018? Appreciate help.

Did you declare your car off the road in advance if it expiring? If you did then you have no worries, if you didn’t then if you remain the registered owner you are liable.

You are correct with regard to needing insurance to tax it.

Never declared it off the road. Suppose I need to just pay the tax now and then get rid of?

If you sell the car the new owner isn’t liable for the back tax ;)

No, the new owner only pays tax from the month he/she bought it.

By "sell" do you mean transfer the car over to another owner and then, I dunno, transfer it back?

    This too shall pass.

I don’t want to be banned or infracted if I answer that truthfully :D

But the dogs on the street even know how to circumvent it, it’s a loophole basically, the Irish legal system has more holes in it than a block of Swiss cheese.
