    Hi,

I've been looking to buy my first car and although I would like to buy something in the range of a 1.6 diesel, I can't really justify it for the mileage I'll be doing.

My budget is anywhere up to 6k.

I'm wondering what your advice on what the best all-round/most powerful 1.4 engine is?
Bear in mind TSI's etc are probably out of the question due to insurance

    thanks.

Toyota, Kia/Hyundai has nippy 1.4 petrol engines as far as I remember. But insurance may not be so different than 1.6 petrol with similar power.

The fact is 1.4 L petrol engines no longer feature in the model range of most of the major manufacturers and have not done so since the start of the decade. Now you have 1.0 or 1.2 turbo charged petrol or larger diesels with equivalent power output. The older model Opel Astra and the current Corsa still feature the 1.4 and it's a good engine with decent performance.
The Toyota Auris 1.3 litre is also excellent.

The Kia/Hyundai 1.4 is 109bhp so as far as non turbo 1.4 cars go, that’s the best you’ll be looking at.

It's a pity. I know quite a few people who have had to replace turbos and its not cheap. I like the relative reliability of a simple non-turbo engine.

Colm you told me yesterday that the 1.6 diesel is around that same hp figure. I know thats not the only thing I should be looking at, but would you recommend petrol over the diesel in the Korean cars?

Either are good. The diesel will feel faster (more torque) and obviously be more economical, but a non turbo petrol is much less complicated than a turbo diesel.

In your case I’d probably just stick with petrol as it’s less likely to go wrong.
If you must have a diesel then the 1.6 CRDi engine in them is probably the best in class but you always have the possibility of an expensive repair looming with any modern diesel.
