Downfall was a great film. And the internet Hitler meltdown speech is legendary as is its many spoofs.

All eyes on Kursk. Slava Ukraini.

Funnily enough he was in a film in the 70s "The Boys From Brazil" wherein:
during a meeting with Professor Bruckner (Bruno Ganz), an expert on cloning, the terrible truth behind the Nazi plan: Mengele, in the 1960s, had secluded several surrogate mothers in a Brazilian clinic and implanted them with zygotes each carrying a sample of Adolf Hitler's DNA preserved since World War II. 94 clones of Hitler had then been born and sent to different parts of the world for adoption. In the hopes that one or more of the boys will turn out like the original Hitler, Mengele has arranged for all of them to be placed with foster parents similar to Hitler's own, and is assassinating their foster fathers at the same age at which Hitler's own died.

Was also in amazing film "Wings of Desire"

Downfall is one of the best movies ever made and his performance is legendary.

Nice in a way to think that hundreds of millions of people around the world who wouldn't ever have seen it - or be aware of who he is - known him from the parody videos too.

    Great actor, RIP.

Aston Villa are 2-0 down at home, and now I have to deal with Hitler's death.

    It's a cruel world.

Yup it is a haunting masterpiece. Too bad most people only knew of this man and the film for the Hitler rant parodies, lot more to him as an actor.

    Sad news.

    Downfall is a true masterpiece.
It should be essential viewing for anyone remotely interested in cinema.

    Downfall is indeed a masterpiece.
I haven't seen the actor in any other film.

Anyone care to lend a recommendation?

Oh, OK. Its a propaganda piece from 1935?
That could be an interesting watch.

Or were you on about something more recent?

If the film was in English I'd give it a watch but can't be doing with subtitles. The short parodies are worth it though, some of them are class.

That's the excuse for people who cant read fast enough to process subtitles.

It's an excuse for people who have no interest in reading a film. That's what books are for and films are for avoiding books.

If you can tolerate subtitles, do yourselves a favour and get your hands on "Bread and Tulips". A gem of a film.

    RIP, Bruno.

    RIP Bruno Ganz.

I also think Alexandra Maria Lara (Traudl Junge) is an absolute beauty.

He was a great actor. I was so lucky that I've seen him on stage in Berlin, can't remember the play (long time ago) but his stage presence was overwhelming and the most impressive thing at the whole experience.
He is someone who can just look into the middle distance and by doing so telling a whole story.

His death is a real loss for all theatre aficionados.

Oh, and pity that in the English speaking part of the world he is mostly remembered for his Hitler role in Downfall. Though admittedly it was his masterpiece as an actor.

I wouldn't agree. I'd be among those who haven't seen him in anything else, so it brought him to a much wider audience than he would probably have reached otherwise. It was a superb performance, and deserves the acclaim it got.

    Really silly attitude.

Within 5 minutes you can adapt to subtitles.

Just means you're missing out on so many great films.

There's plenty of entertaining films (more than I'll ever get time to see) without resorting to subtitles. You'll find a certain type will only rave about a film because it has subtitles.

I have a few films with subtitles in my film collection
