Wired controller issue

Firstly this will probably be a really poor explanation but I'm hoping someone might have an idea of what I mean.

Last week I bought my nephew this to have as a second controller.

It was working fine up until today and didn't get too much use in the time he has had it. Now when the Xbox is switched on, if you try to use the left thumbstick straight away it just quickly jumps between up and down and continues until the thumbstick is let go. This has made it impossible to get beyond the homescreen. I've tried resetting the enhanced buttons to see if that may have been an issue but no change. I've unplugged the micro usb cable and reconnected and that too makes no difference.

Any ideas or suggestions as to what may be causing this? Is it a faulty unit that needs returning to Smyths?

The reviews on the Smyths website are 50-50 between great and poor.
Sounds like a hardware issue. If you have the receipt, try for a replacement, see if it's any better.
I think you're trying your luck with unofficial controllers.
