12mm or 18mm Plywood

    Hi all
I'm looking to get some 8x4 marine plywood to make a climbing wall for my kids out the back garden. I have the climbing holds and the screws and fixings and the place I'm looking at has 12mm and 18mm in stock. Looking at the photo of the hold with the screw in it and it is about 18mm so would this be perfect? Obviously the weight of the sheet would be more and I'm wondering if this would be worse considering they will be climbing on it?!
Also I've never hung something this size so any tips for attaching this to a back garden block wall would be great!
    Thanks

18mm is standard alright. 12 would flex a bit much and put a fair strain on the back of the T nuts.
How heavy are the kids and are you doing any steep stuff or just sticking to vertical?

It'll just be vertical Roen, and in landscape so it'll be more wide than high. It'll be just my 4 year old using it for now, I won't be putting any of them high up but I might drill holes to be able to update it as they get older.

Do absolutely drill it all out and attach the t nuts before it goes up. Then you can change holds as they get handier without taking down the sheets.

2x4 frame onto the wall and the ply on to that. Probably a bit overkill but kids grow up fast.
I assume you're happy with the solidity of the wall.

This thread from a couple of years back should be of interest in terms of ideas. The couple of pictures attached help and looks like a job well done:

You wouldn't just put it straight onto the wall Roen?? I've never attempted a frame before (had to Google it there just to see exactly what it was!).

Dr Colossus, that thread is my inspiration for this! I remember seeing it years ago and it always stuck in my head. Ours will be different as I'm assuming my smallies are smallies hence the reason I'll be hanging it portrait for now. And also it will have grass underneath

    I'd use 2x4. Seen 2x2 used too.

I'm not a big fan of express nails to fix wood to walls but they only require a drill and hammer and you have your frame up.

Then just screw the ply to the 2x4.

I'd make sure the ply was well coated in something to weather proof it too. Especially on the edges. You can also get a grit paint for the face with holds too.

You'll be having them up the Verdon Gorge in no time.

I will be throwing a few coats of yacht varnish (or something similar) before prepping it for the climbing holds. I'm thinking that the frame might be a good idea and I would be able to take it on a lot easier as I would probably take it down in winter. Thanks again for the pointers Roen
