Outside a certain property on the north quays there's a large quantity of butts thrown on path. Early morning. Every day. Not too far from O'C Street. Anyone notice this? The council must be fed up. Who is doing this? What can they do to stop this?

    People smoking outside a building?

Do you want to tell us what the building is.

It's like someone dumped a big ashtray on the path. On Eden Quay.

The obvious solution is for the council to hire someone really annoying to hang around near these smokers and engage them in conversation, maybe occasionally licking them on the face and just making it uncomfortable for them to be there.
Occasionally asking "Can I bum a smoke" would help too. Smokers hate that.

The thing is that it's a whole pile of butts indicating someone had dumped an ashtray or three. I don't get the impression there's group of smokers about. But it's a daily occurrence and it's amazing the council hasn't acted. But what can they do?

The reason for this is the drug addicts etc go around and empty the cig butt bins into their hands looking for ones to smoke.

I see guys do this regularly.

They would need to catch them doing it.

Is a bar or other premises close by as some tend to just dump their cig butt bins too.

Another thing depending on time it could be council themselves and going to suck it all up with the machine.

There's a certain place in Swords, Co. Dublin in the Plaza Shopping Centre where smokers stand INSIDE the doorway in the lobby smoking away, no one gives a shit.

Now that's an interesting point because I see that machine with fellow driving it but further down the quays. I don't know its route or if it goes straight down the quays directly. If it did it surely would suck them up. But the driver would also surely be aware it's a daily problem and report to supervisor ?

Is it at or near a bus stop where people might have a smoke before a long bus journey?

Have you reported it to management or the HSE?

We're taking about forty butts daily or so. It's not a bunch of smokers. It's clearly a case of dumping.

There are many bus stops the length of Eden Quay but as it happens there isn't one at this location.

Outside the laughter lounge ? Or the casino ?

Taxi rank could explain another where taxi driver empties it out.

Is this a guessing game? I’ve often seen staff from the casino out with sweeping brush so it’s not there.

    Why not just say it?

Well you're right. Why not. There's an hotel down from there. Directly there. I go under the canopy waiting when its raining and it's constantly filthy with butts.

Wouldn't think taxi drivers smoke in their cars or have heaving ashtrays in them, if they did people would complain to the NTA and fines would be issued, etc. Its at least 15 years since I smelt smoke in a taxi, the workplace smoking ban changed all that. I'm sure there might still be the odd taxi driver who has a smoke out the window but its definitely not widespread in my experience.

    See them smoke every day.

That's the problem with cigarettes, smokers who would never dream of dropping other litter have zero problem dropping cigarette butts.

Plenty still do. I've often gotten into taxis where the driver has obviously just smoked.

Litter warden should be monitoring and implementing littering fines.

Look outside most pubs in Dublin and they are filthy with cigarette butts. Shame on pubs also.

No implementation. No litter warden presence. Farcical.

    Why bother having litter wardens.

Is that the Cliften Court Hotel you're talking about? Because I can assure you it is very far from filthy with butts.

There are brass ashtrays on the wall at two locations and the area outside is swept very regularly. I drink in that pub all the time and it could never be called anything other than spotless.

There is however a taxi rank and a salvation army hostel nearby so your butts may have come from there.

The very place. Lannigans beside it specifically. Filthy outside. Every morning. Yes there's a Taxi rank there. A small one. Every morning butts strewn across close to the door of Lannigans. And the disappointing thing is that I regularly see a council worker on that quay with cart or blower.

Yeap, they just walk by. No sweeping EVER. Absolute waste of my tax money.

They only hire inner city relations , who do the bare minimum. The city is filthy.
