Two jobs one person

I am in contention for two jobs at the moment. However, one is a little further ahead in the recruitment process than the other:

Job #1: second interview coming on Tuesday
Job #2: have been forwarded a task to complete, deadline Monday.

I would prefer #2 over #1, it's a much better fit for me skillwise and I felt much better coming out of that first interview than I did #1.

Should job #1 offer me a position before #2 even gets to a second interview stage, how do I deal with it? Should I mention in the second interview that I'm interviewing elsewhere? How long can I "decide on my answer", as it were.

Any tips really appreciated. (As my partner said, of all the problems to have this is a pretty first world one, but I am at a bit of a loss here.)

    GRMA in advance!

If you need a job, take job 1 and continue with job 2 application.

If you don't need a job, then depending on your preference take job 1 or not and continue with job 2 application.

If you do end up taking job 1 and later get job 2 (and still want it more than job 1), then understand that it's an inconvenience for the recruiters/bosses etc at job 1. Let them know you are taking job 2, that you understand and apologise for the inconvenience you may be causing.

If I get offered job 1, I would immediately contact job 2, tell them about the job offer, and ask is it possible they speed up the hiring process, as I would prefer to work for them. If they say no, then I would take job 1.

I would agree with this and I would also be honest with the recruiter / hiring manager in Job 1 about your engagement with another process - if they really want you, they might even make you a better offer than you might expect in order to persuade you away from Job 2.

How do the two jobs compare salary-wise? Location? Opportunities to progress?

Yes, using job 2 to get a better deal in job 1 is definitely a good strategy. (Especially if the role is something which is hard to fill, e.g. a particular type of software engineering).
