Trading in car with VRT exemption

    Reviving this thread...

I brought in a car with a VRT exemption about 6 months ago - genuine reasons, I was living abroad for a few years and took my car with me when moving home. I've since decided I'd like to upgrade though so I'd want to trade it in.

What happens if I do that? Will I receive a VRT bill? I don't even know what the VRT would have cost because I wasn't given any kind of valuation when I got the exemption.

Yes you would be liable for VRT. Best hold onto it until after the exemption expires.

Mak s no sense unless you desperately need to do it or the VRT is de minimis. The VLC will have a statement in it specifying the date before it can be sold without paying VRT. Thus is 12 months from registration in Ireland. You will have to pay VRT based on the value at date of importation. In 6 months time you can sell it without this cost.

See if your car is on the VRT calculator.

Contact your local revenue office where you got the exemption from. They will advise what to do
