This is totally irrelevant to the thread (sorry, not sorry) but I opened it and just had a flashback to the last St Valentine's Day when I was dating someone.

I took her to a fancy restaurant just off Grafton Street, and seated beside us was a woman,a divorcee (we learned her life story soon enough) who'd been brought out for dinner by her daughter, for the night that was in it.

Before our second course arrived, this woman peered across the gap between our tables, and proceeded to ask every personal question you can think of: how long had we known one another? were we living together? Any plans for children, quickly followed by a question to herself "how old are you?"

Then she started on about herself, we discovered that she's a reasonably well-known published poet. I told her that I write poetry myself, which was met with disparagement "a lot of the younger poets these days are essayists writing in verse" (ok she had a point). Then she got her phone out and started showing us pics of all the celebrities she knows. My then-partner asked her age... "Guess!" We approximated her age a good twenty years younger than her looks. "The secret is", she said, drawing closer, "I drink a glass of my own PISS every morning".

We didn't order dessert. No particular reason for sharing that, if anything I just wanted to record it for my own memory. I'm sure others have good/ nightmareish VD memories (and sorry for hijacking your thread, OP!)

Jeez it's not a huge deal to buy her a card if that's what makes her happy. You bitter about the holiday you gave her and your child?

Ah no, I’m not smug at all. I just don’t like Valentine’s Day, and the commercial bull**** that goes along with it. Bull**** that shouldn’t make anyone feel inadequate or unloved. Even if I were alone, I’d still not buy into it, or waste a second thought on it.
