MK6 VW Golf coolant temperature

Hi there, I've a MK6 Golf 1.6 TDI and lately the coolant temperature has been struggling to stabilise at 90 degrees, when driven hard it creeps up and eventually falls back down. I had suspected a faulty thermostat which I replaced however the problem still persists. Anyone got any further suggestions? I've noticed the electric fan is quite noisy lately and I wonder is it not performing as well as it should be?

Sounds like a bad temperature sensor but not sure, needs to check by scanner. It can cause the poor performance because the computer set the cold engine settings and the fuel mixture goes rich.
