Can I get disciplinary at work for refusing a large job because of back pain?

Hi sometimes in our store one or two staff are asked to travel large distances and help open other stores for 12 hour days unpacking and carrying boxes and putting up various equipment all day. I've made it known to my employer I have severe lower back pain due to an injury few years ago but I've never refused to do anything at work ...but I don't want to do this store opening as I'm terrified my back will lock and I'm far from home and my chiropracter and obviously it's incredibly painful. Can I be given disciplinary if I refuse?

    Strictly speaking, yes.

If you are unable to fulfill your role on a regular or ongoing basis due to injury or illness, your employer would be entitled to begin the process of letting you go. Though they should make every attempt to accommodate you otherwise, including a transfer or provision of equipment to make it easier.

Your contract likely includes a clause where you've agreed that you will work in places which are not your primary place of work from time to time.

Your only option is to go to a physio and a get a sick cert deeming you unfit for anything but light duties. However, this cert applies to your normal workplace as well as distant ones, and could lead to you being moved permanently.
