Possible to have hearth flush with floor?

    Hi.

I want a new fireplace and hearth for our gas fire. One idea I have is to have the hearth flush with the floor as this would give some extra space in the room.

My other half is adamant that this would go against building regulations and says that a hearth must be 125mm thick. We don’t have a back boiler so my reading of the regulations is that the hearth needs to be 12mm thick.

I suppose my question is does the 12mm (if I am right on this) have to be above the level of our wooden flooring or can the 12mm sit below/ alongside the floorboards so the top of it is flush with our flooring.

I hope this makes sense! Thanks

The regulations for a hearth for a gas fire states:
    min 12mm thick
min 225 horizontal forward projection of fire radiant
min 150mm horizontal projection each side of fire radiant
min 50mm height of front edge above floor

    Sorry

Thanks a million. I missed that in my quick search (though at least I was right about the 12mm bit!). Back to the drawing board so.

sorry but the 50mm refers to the space required between a combustible material and the underside of of the hearth not how high the hearth must be off the floor if you look at diagram 8 on page 26 you will see the finished floor is level with hearth

Yes, but as per current gas regulations: it states as below, interpret as you may, but to me it reads a measurement from the front edge of the HEARTH to the FLOOR

This is section 2, SOLID FUEL APPLIANCES of Part J, but agreed it shows floor level with heart in the diagram.
