Data solution for holiday home intermittent use

Can't find an answer to this anywhere so any help is much appreciated.

I'm looking for a data SIM to use in a wifi unit / dongle, for use in my remote holiday home to be able to switch on the heating remotely a day before we arrive, for example. I don't need it for normal internet use as we use our own phone data when we are there. Ideally I'd like to buy a few GB of credit, and have that credit always available to be used - i.e. it will not expire after 30 days. Is there such a data only product available on the market?

    Nothing with a long expiry.

An SMS module seems like a far more appropriate solution here. People have been installing them in holiday homes for decades for that reason.

if a SIM with all credit used is left there is it possible to apply credit to it from your own phone thus enabling it?

I have no knowledge of this, just a thought .... it might be worth a few quid even for a once-off use?
