Quick question. Why does the Glas scheme allow spraying/licking of rushes and not topping ?

To give a chance to the traditional flora that's choked out by the prg high input monoculture and almost dissapeared. The use of chems would be reasonably targeted on the rushy area which wouldn't be much use.

I'd say you could put it under the banner of all rare and decreasing flora and fauna.

    It only allows spot spraying.

Topping is allowed but not after March 15th and until the meadow is mowed - see points 7 and 9 on page 51/52 of the GLAS T&C's link.

Edit - we didn't choose THM as part of our GLAS plan so I had to look up the rules.

Yes and not boom spraying. I don't think an explanation as to why is needed.

Got some glas lipp ground licked this year by a contractor with a quad set up. 30eur an hour, I supplied the chemical. Serious results.

Re spraying of trad hay meadows:

Spec says rushes must be controlled by spot spraying/ weed licking. There is no reference to spraying for other weeds so I assume it IS permitted but I notice a Teagasc say it is not. I need to control plantain and dandelions before there is no grass left. Has anyone clarified this with planner or Dept?

You can control noxious/invasive weeds and rushes by weed wiping or spot spraying. Blanket spraying isn't allowed.

A traditonal Hay meadow would have these species in it - they are harmless to livestock and indeed provided many trace elements and give some natural protection from worms and other parasites. Blanket spraying is certainly not allowed under GLAS as it would entirely defeat the purpose of this element of the scheme

We didn't choose THM as one of our options but went with LIPP. I drive around the fields in the jeep with a battery operated pump connected to a hand held lance and 20 litres of herbicide. I have a handheld operator licence so it sorta covers.
