Reserving a registration

    Hi,

I previously reserved registration numbers many years ago. However it seems a lot has changed. It now seems you have to pay €1000 for the privilege but also it would appear you can't reserve a number prior to the current year ?

    From : https://www.revenue.ie/en/importing-vehicles-duty-free-allowances/guide-to-vrt/vehicle-registration-tax/registration-plates.aspx

"To reserve a number, you must apply to the Central Vehicle Office at the address shown below, on or after 1 November in the year before it is intended to first bring the vehicle into use."

Is my reading correct ? I can't reserve a number for a 2013 car example ? or is it that I can't reserve a number plate today for 2013 for use in 2019 ? I would have to wait until 2020 ?

You can't reserve numbers for previous years, because they've likely already been given out.

If you're importing a car that was manufactured in 2013, you'll end up with a high enough number as there'll already have been several thousand 2013 cars registered from then until now.

I used the motortax.ie site - and found a number of registrations not in use, and I don't mean above the latest number in the year already.

So its impossible now to say purchase 99-d-86 (one I purchased back in 2009 when I was't used ) and then used on an import. That facility is no longer available ?

I don't believe so, I could be wrong though. It might be worth ringing Shannon and seeing if there's anything they could do.

You can only reserve future dated registrations.

The whole system was destroyed circa 2009/2010 when they started off fresh imports at 120k.

I've been trying all morning to speak to a human in revenue on this but to no avail.

With a 2012 car you will get the next available free number in that county. But given the amount of stuff that gets registered in Dublin every year, chances are it will be a 5 or 6 digit number.
