Not long to go now, 'Mid February'..
SIGIL™ is a free megawad created by John Romero for the original 1993 DOOM®. It contains nine single-player and nine deathmatch levels. The free megawad will be released in mid- February 2019 and requires players own the original 1993 registered version of DOOM® in order to play. SIGIL™ is the spiritual successor to the fourth episode of DOOM®, and picks up where the original left off.

It's the PC edition I'm guessing I will have to own, no chance this can be used with a console version of the game at all?

CiDeRmAn, if you're an Android user, I use Delta Touch to play Brutal Doom with a bluetooth keyboard and mouse..

Mouse support for Delta Touch is Android Oreo and higher only.

Google Play Store: Delta Touch [THE Doom engine source port]

What will I need to buy, on my PC, to play this new release?
Can one still buy a compatible version of Doom, some 26 years downstream!

If you want to go the legal route you can get Doom on Steam.

However the steam version is unoptimized garbage so you will have to use a modern doom source port like doomsday. All you need is the .wad file from the doom install directory. The doomsday port I had will find it automatically if you have the game installed.

Works with all Doom games and most doom engine games like Heretic and Hexen.

You'll be able to use the interface to load mods like the mod romero is releasing.

You will be using a source port in any case.. as gzDoom is mentioned as the preferred choice. Romero would even load up work in progress to test, using gzDoom.

The wad calls on processes the original build of Doom simply can not do. The megawad has been built from the ground up with source ports in mind.

Anything from the last decade should be capable of running a source port, you might have problems with dynamic lighting and liquids, reduce the count and persistence of blood/gibs/bodies etc.

Forgot to say.. don't forget gog!

They have a selection of Doom goodies.

    https://www.gog.com/game/the_ultimate_doom

There's results for packages and whatnot, related to Doom, on the bottom.

A fiver for a legal purchase isn't too bad, tbh.

I'm happy to pay the required, though I must own Doom on a shedload of devices already, Snes, Jaguar, I think I even have the 3DO version somewhere!

I'd go for the gog release. They put the effort into keeping old games up to date and running while they are just farted on to steam and left it barely playable states.

Great that there is a new "offical" episode being released.

Pushed back again, to mid May, due to a delay in the manufacturing of physical copies.

Once shipping starts, the megawad will be made available one week later.

YouTube user Civvie 11's review. He has niggles, but is in the right frame of mind to enjoy it still. Browse his channel if you can, he is very in tune with that period of gaming, not much chin stroking going on.

    ..unlike GManLives review.. oh well..
