Audi A2 used - opinions

Looking for a replacement potentially for the ma’s trusty Honda Civic.
Ideally another Civic but she would consider something slightly smaller, and petrol. Max budget 12-13 k.
Hard to find a suitable Civic. So many are diesel.
Glanced my eye on the Audi A1- looks to tick a lot of the boxes. Is a decent sized small car and very well finished. A bit of style would be nice!
What are the pitfalls to look for? I think they’re fairly sound, never heard much bad about them. Diesel or petrol considered

    Are they a bit ...tiny?

Reliability and low running costs are important considerations.

If your mum doesn't do motorway driving or long distance then stay well clear of diesels.

Look up Citroen c1 is the same as a Yaris apart from style.

    Hyundai i10 or i20

    Fiesta

They’re bigger inside than an A1. Slightly smaller footprint.

    Not remotely stylish though.

You’re talking TSI or 1.6 TDI engines, neither of which will be as bombproof as the Civic.

Defo not the city cars. She’s used to a reasonably solid sized cars, they’d be way too small. Lives in the country, mixed driving. Lots of short trips and the odd longer one. That’s why I’m wary of the diesel Civic, despite 80% of used being diesel- the petrol ones are at a premium.
Fiesta considered but not a pov spec one.

Any insights on the A1? Reliability and what to look for?
Did that 1.2 VW petrol give trouble?

    It’s subjective I guess

Just looking at them, she would defo like them. It’s a familiar Honda, good visibility and easy to park and run. Not cheap of course!

    What about a Suzuki Swift?

Nah, not a fan. They’re a bit light

What’s to look out in those engines? I know the Honda 1.4 petrol is sound without issues

A Nissan Note is another option you could look at. A ford B-Max is a cool little car. A Kia Venga and a Hyundai ix20 are two other options.

I’m kind of taken in by the A1 looking at them. Anyone got insights or experiences of them? Especially reliability problems and economy?

It's like any car, service it right and it should be good.

Get one with full history, but them Audi's hold their prices quite strong.

They don’t seem overly complicated . A tatted up Polo in essence I suppose

Except a polo is much nicer to drive , big wheels and low profile tyres ruin them , but even without this option Audi A1's are much harder in the suspension department and smaller inside because of the roof shape. I like small powerful cars but A1 s miss the mark completely. A Polo cross is and interesting small upmarket looking car.

I think the Cross Polo actually makes the Polo less upmarket looking than a regular one. It’s a modern day Rover Streetwise and essentially a rival to the Dacia Sandro Stepway

There is a 181 Sandero Stepway near me that the owner bought last year brand new and it has both the Sandero and Stepway badges taken of it. Its a Dacia like not a BMW and the owner paid how much for that. You would think someone buyng a Dacia would be sensible with money and not waste it on something silly like getting there car debadged.

Maybe they just peeled the badges off themselves? Can’t see the big deal in that.

OP is going to be looking at a high rate of diesels, such as the one linked.
