roof felt hanging into gutters, which is then soaking wet

    Hi All,

Recently moved into a new house, and was clearing out the gutters of leaves, when i noticed that all the gutters have the roofing felt hanging down into the gutter and almost sitting in the bottom of the gutter. This felt is then constantly wet and so i`m a little worried that this soaking wet felt is going to cause problems with the timers in the eaves and batons. What i have seen before is a more of a plastic drip tray that fits under the last rows of tiles so the water runs off this drip tray into the gutter. It looks like the builders that did this roof didn`t add this drip tray only extended the felt over.
Now my question is this ok to have the felt wet or should i for a start get a Stanley knife to trim this off to be more near the tile ledge to stop water getting under the tile, or is it standard practice to leave the felt like this and have it wet, which would mean the felt under the roof would start to become wet too.
Any advice on this would be great. Thanks

I haven't drawn an eaves detail in probably a decade, but if memory serves me, it's not unusual for the last few hundred millimetres to be a heavier grade felt (5U?) lapped over a lighter membrane (150mm end lap) which runs up the rest of the roof.

Any details I recall seeing show this hanging into the gutter somewhat, if not quite as far as where the water will lie

The felt shouldnt be absorbing water.
While obviously the felt int he gutter will be wet it shouldnt soak up up into the roof.

I wouldn’t just trim it back without fitting something to do the job required. You need something to direct the water into the gutter to stop it going onto the wall. Water will run around the tile and travel back up a bit before dripping under its own weight. Modern practice is I believe to fit a robust plastic tray. The trouble with the felt is that it will chafe and perish over time but that might take a while.

Felt wont absorb water so there isnt really any issue.
Also, your gutters shouldn't be holding water...
