When to change brake pads - Peugeot

I have 2 year old peugeot car and after service at the peugeot dealer, I was told I need new brake pads and disks would have to be levelled, cost, just shy of €360-380

I took the wheel off and measured the pads with a vernier calipers and there is 4mm left. The disks look perfect but I see the argument that the disk should be skimmmed when pads are changed (why was it ok for the past 30 years?).

At what dept should I change my pads? I would have though 1mm was a good bet.

If there is no lip on the discs there is probably no need to change them.
Discs can last several set of pads without skimming or anything done to them.
You can use the caliper to measure the discs.

    Explained in this video

Discs need to be skimmed if they're uneven or have ridges on them, if yours are smooth I would think they're OK. If you're pads are wearing evenly then change them before the metal backing is going to contact the disc, There's usually a wear limit marker on them to indicate they need changing or your manual might tell you what the wear limit is - possibly around 2-3mm.

You can change the pads yourself at a cost of less than 50
This is the DIY forum after all..

Do not pay 400EUR, it is too much. Like a bike said the pads does not cost too much. The disc may are ok if it is not warped or too worn out.
I can make for you all calculations how much it cost, I am already "famous" on that area :) I can not advertise, but I can make the all suggestions or even teach you how DIY. The private messages are moderation free :P
