First time working as a "consultant". Also a student. How to organize taxes?

Hi folks, so I quit my job to do a Hdip. Not getting any social welfare or back to education etc. Just living off my savings.

My old workplace called me and asked if I would come back for a few hours a week in a consultant sort of role.

I could get about 300 euro a week from this, depending on how many hours I work.

I haven't set up a business. They just said I can invoice them for the hours worked.

So how does it work? Do I have to declare the money I earn on a regular basis? What's the easiest way to go about this? Do I even need to declare it if it's a few hundred a week? No idea how this works.

    Thanks in advance.

Why not just go back as an employee on an hourly rate?

Revenue have a guide on what constitutes an employment and a self-employment. Someone working for the one customer at their place of business is most likely an employee. Using the term "consultant" does not change that.

Simply declare your earnings on your annual Form 12 tax return.

    Simple and straightforward.

It has be simple and straight forward. But the OP does not meet Revenue's definition of a self employed consultant. Will have less tax credits and will be hit for at least €500 PRSI.

When is the money (including lost growth) Michael Noonan took in the Pension Levy going to be paid back?
