Looking for help with KNX

Can someone let me know if I am in the right forum and if not point me in the right directions . The brother is thinking of using the below which is I believe is an open source for building automation (commercial)

To remotely connect and control you need a front end similar to below, NET-X which is compatible with KNX. Each one of these I believe comes blank and has to be customised and cost approx €8K each. He is looking to see if its possible/ more cost effective to buy his own box and get someone to write the necessary software.

There are other front end boxes out there that are cheaper but are more geared for the domestic market

Not something I know much about but I do find the topic interesting and from reading your links, my understanding is; KNX is an "Open Standard" and ETS is a proprietary (i.e. NOT "Open Source") implementation of software that enables the design/creation of a KNX compliant system.

From the wiki page on the subject I understand that there are two possible pieces of related software you might want. A KNX compliant server to manage the network and an ETS equivalent to design the network.

On the first question, it looks like there is an obsolete project called KNXLive , but it's no longer maintained so it would not be a recommended route.

There is another open source project around home automation called openHAB and it enables links to a KNX system.

But even if you went that route to manage the network you'd still need the ETS equivalent to create/design the underlying KNX network in the first place.

Could you get something written? Well it's an open standard so, in theory, yes... but it looks a big complex system so it strikes me as impractical in the real world.

Did you ask in the home automation forum here? This is very specialized topic/software so that would be my first place to ask!

And, if you find something, do please, come back an update the thread for future reference!
