Looking for a bit of advice.

Got a new puppy 2 weeks ago--(I know maybe a bot soon but my other dog was pining terrible and not eating after the newfie passed and honestly Id always have 2 together)

Shes was vaccinated with Nobivac at 4 weeks and due her second one today.Last puppy it was just the 2 (at 4 weeks and 8 weeks) and then safe to walk after a few days.

Went to vets to get her second one and they told me that they use a different one called Vanguard and that the course has to start again meaning that a vaccination today and another in 2 weeks time and a 3rd at 16 weeks.

First time Ive come across this. Usually a week after the second one Id be walking the puppy in order to socialise etc but now its another 2 weeks +2 days before I can walk her. If you miss that vital 10-14 week period in socialisation it can be difficult to socialise properly in my opinion.

Anyone ever heard of this before?

If you want a puppy covered fully, in addition to the primary vaccine they must get a 7 in 1 (dhppi) after 10 weeks (so that maternal antibodies have waned sufficiently to allow a response) and 2 lepto shots between 2 and 4 weeks apart, with the first one any time from 7 weeks.

The nobivac/vanguard part is irrelevant they are brand names and tell you nothing about the vaccine.

    Most commonly used protocol is:
    Parvo only at 6 weeks.
    Lepto at 8 weeks
7in1 and lepto again at 10 weeks.

Or: parvo and lepto at 7 weeks (which is a little late for first parvo shot) and dhppi and lepto at 10 weeks.

I try to balance socialisation versus vaccination coverage. I have been known to carry a pup around in my jacket to meet people and go see new things and places when initial vaccs are done and before the full course is complete.

I wouldn't let them down on the ground where unvaccinated dogs might have passed (anywhere outside my front gate) but I do let them play in my back garden where I know foxes and unvaccinated dogs can't get in. I wouldn't let them into the farm (rats, foxes etc) and I wouldn't let them run about the local park. I would invite anyone I knew around with vaccinated dogs to meet them, and make an attempt to find puppy classes that only allowed vaccinated pups.

I suppose it's a personal decision. I know there's an element of risk in what I decide to do (I can't 100% guarantee rats carrying lepto haven't been in my garden), but I think getting that early socialisation and experiences are worth the risk. Having said that, I've never had something go wrong and I can't imagine how devastated I'd be if it did.

4 weeks seems very early, my understanding is that they are still covered by the Mother's antibodies at that point.

My vet actually says proper socialisation is more important than vaccination, so carrying around and lots of positive experiences

Pretty much everything that Choc Chip does here has oodles of back-up by veterinary societies, veterinary behaviour societies, and by the pharmaceutical giants that make vaccines! Google it... You'll find shed loads of support for getting your pup out and about in a way that seriously minimises the risk of infection :)

Ok I messed up the dates---Her vaccination cert says "4 weeks" on it but I was reading it wrong.

She got Nobivac dhppi and nobivac l4 @ 7 weeks (parvo and lepto) and the breeder said she`d need a second one 4 weeks later (today shes exactly 11 weeks) and then we could socialise her a few days after that.

So according to the breeders schedule she should be through her full vaccines today (11 weeks)--Shes gotten exactly what omicron says.

    Pavo and Lepto @7 weeks
Today she should have gotten her dhppi and lepto<<<<she did get these today although in a different brand.

Whats worrying me is today I go to the vet and they tell me they don't use Nobivac but use Vanguard and they have to start the entire course again which sounds a bit funny to me.

So she gets Vanguard 7 cpvl--(exactly the same as Nobivac dhppi) and Vanguard 7 da2pi (same as Nobivac l4) today.

My concern isn't about her being vaccinated properly but the fact that the vet has decided to start the entire course again just because they don't use the nobivac brand of vaccines.

Is the vet correct in starting again(delaying me being able to take her out for another 3-4 weeks or are they just trying to get stuck in because they don't use a certain brand of vaccine??

That's a bit of tricky one because in theory it should work fine to just give the dhppi and lepto at 10 weeks, even if it's a different brand. However neither vaccine company will back that up as vaccinated properly because the brands changed in between.
I certainly wouldn't worry about taking the puppy out after the first of the vanguard vaccines, she is covered but the vaccine manufacturers nor the vet can stand over it which is why they're suggesting a second one from the same company.

If it's any consolation most vets I'm familiar with charge a very small fee or no fee for the second booster so cost wise it should work out similarly.

Has she already had the vanguard on top of the nobivac?

If so, I'll leave someone who knows more about vaccs to reply.

If not, could you call around and find a practice that uses nobivac (I know mine does) and have them administer the second vacc?

    Thanks for that.
I just found it strange that they would recommend starting a different brand.
I probably should have just rang around to find a vet that did use the same brand and got her done there.

Eh where are the pics?! :D

I have a spooky dog so socialisation trumps waiting for me. I brought Lucy out in the car and to puppy classes before she was fully vaccinated - the vets classes didn't require full vaccination so I queried this with the place that was doing the puppy classes and they said they'd go with whatever the vet recommended. She met my friends dog too - much to his disgust as she marched into his crate when he was in there :p. I carried her around the corner and sat on the wall beside the main road so she could get used to cars and buses going by (Bailey isn't a fan of busses/trucks etc so I needed to have her see them separately from him and make her own mind up about them). I brought her out to see the bins being collected every week so she could get used to the noise of the truck because our morning walk is usually the same time as the bin collections.... The bin men loved her lol.

Bailey and Lucy have had titre tests done so I don't vaccinate anymore - they both went on playdates to my friends house when she got a new pup - the tables were turned on Lucy as she wasn't into the pup at all :p Bailey was more 'I've raised one pup already so I've got this' and didn't mind her lol
