Register portion of business for VAT?

I'm a service provider working in health care and am not currently VAT registered. I'd like to start selling products related to Healthcare, and register this portion of my business for VAT, but don't want to start charging VAT on my services. Can I simply set up a new business as a sole trader and register this side of the business for VAT without affecting the service provider side of things? The products would only be a small portion of the income.
    Thanks

    No.

If you are selling in a personal capacity and as a sole trader its the same thing.

You could incorporate a company and register it for VAT but its pretty messy and likely tax inefficient unless your turnover is 50K or so for just the company side of things.
