EV holiday?

    Hi
I have a Kona EV, and we are thinking of going on trip to the UK,

Nothing too strenuous, probably get the boat across then head to Devon or Cornwall.

Probably do about 2000km over a week so would be looking to charge every other day.

    Am I mad?
I plan to look for 50KW chargers but worry that we could be hanging about truck stops waiting to charge or waiting for someone else to finish.

Should I book accommodation that have charging points. We will have a 2 year old with us so trying to reduce hanging about time if possible.

I have looked at the Zap-Map app that seem to have enough chargers in the area but looking for a little advice if anyone had some.

    Thanks.

Don't you have to pay for charging in the UK now?

Not saying that's a problem, but many Irish who are used to free public xharging might not know this.

I dont mind paying. and perhaps it would be a better system with better monitoring if they are pay for use. nothing worse to get to a charge point and it being out of order.

However there are quite a few different companies doing it so might have to setup several different accounts, which i would prefer not to do. Would hope there is a one for all charge point.

The zap-map does show Free and Pay charging points.

If you don't do it in a Kona you'd never do it.

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

A tiny bit of planning and you'll be fine.

One of the regular posters in here took his #rapidgate Leaf 40 on a 5,000km trip across Europe in the middle of last summer. He managed. That said he is an expert EV owner and he planned it very carefully. With Kona EV you will only have to charge about 5 or 6 times on your entire trip :)

Our journey last summer was actually just over 8000 klicks in total. In 2017 we also went to Cornwall on the Leaf 24 without any issues. The chargers were never a problem in UK due to copious number of CHAdeMO on the Airtricity. In the Continent on a trip spanning across many countries the number of required charging passes and apps was the only issue and Germany was quite poor in general. I didn't even plan it carefully (apart from making sure I had the required cards and apps): You'll have plenty of time to plan for the next leg while charging.

You will have absolutely no issues with making the trip with the Kona even with CCS being a bit less well served.
