As the the title says my NCT was due in march 2018, never booked it in till January 2019 and failed due to worn ball joints on the front (any idea of cost for both to be repaired?)

Getting it sorted this week and will rebook next week (feb 2019)

Question is if the car passes will the cert only be till march 2019 or will to be Feb 2020?

6 month cert as you're outside the testing period.

Are NCTs different across car brands now?

I'd say he was asking the brand to help with a cost estimate

I was to be fair .

First question was a rough estimate of the cost of getting the ball joints done .

2nd question was about the nct.

Assuming bottom ball joint , micks garage shows dearest ball joint at 39 euros. Rough estimate an hour to change the ball joint .

150-200 would be my estimate but open to correction on that

    Plus tracking then

Called into a garage next to the job on way home from work, said wishbone needs to be replaced with ball joint as hard to get old one out and new one in??? 110 for ball joint and wishbone x 2, 80 labour, plus 40 tracking

It's easier to fit the entire wishbone as one, downfall it's more expensive.

It's hard to get out if you don't have the correct tool, with tool it shouldn't be a bad job.

110€ for 2 wishbones fully loaded is about correct, tracking is also around 40€

If your paying 80€ for labour anyway, you could ask if he could fit the ball joint independently and not replace entire wishbone and cost on that? 2 ball joints would be maybe 40/50€ depending on supplier.

Cert til March 2020 if it passes

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 816 ✭✭✭zurbfoundation

how does the testing period work? I am about to retest a corolla that had NCT expire in May 2018. Providing it passes, when would cert be vailed until?

I put a camper through the CVRT last year that had been off the road two years. After a test and a retest, I got a 6 month cert only.

Depend on year of car and expiry of previous/current cert

    False

Test will be 6 months of validity only due to length of time out of test.
If you miss the test date by 3 months it's on to 6 months.

This applies to both NCT (I have had personal experience of this) and DOE/CVRT

Nope. For nct it doesn’t matter if the car is out of test for 15 years or never tested at all, if it’s due in the month of March, it’ll either get until March 2020 or March 2021 depending on how old it is. The only time you get less is if the cars monthly due date is more than 90 days ahead of the test.
So if the car was due in May, it would only get until May 2019.

doesnt 90 days only apply to early testing? we are spaking about expired tests here
If you are overdue a test and bring a car in late your test certificate will only be valid from the date of the actual test until the next date on which it is normally due.

This will result in a certificate of less than two year's (or one year) duration, depending on the age of the vehicle.

Those who don't have a valid NCT certificate should also be aware that NCT data is now supplied to the gardaí, so they can target those who are failing to ensure their cars are roadworthy.

No it applies to current and expired tests

    This is false. Again.

You get 6 months. If your car is out since Jan-2018 and you present for a test now, you will only get 6 months.

Yes it only applies to early testing.

Testing of cars outside of the cycle (IE the displayed validity + 90 days) will only give a 6 month certificate.

Have you a link to this, I can't find anything to support it?

Either could I but I know it to be the case.
So I contacted the NCTS with the following:

    Hello,

Could you please forward me the statutory grounds for issuing an NCT certificate with 6 months validity for vehicles tested late and out of test cycle (Ie over 91 days past the date of previous certificate validity expiry)

I cannot find anything online, and the issue arose on this discussion board:

    Thanks in advance

    Kind Regards

There is no such thing as a six month cert if a car passes within 90 days of its due month regardless of whether it currently has a valid cert or not.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,903 ✭✭✭✭ELM327

I will post up the reply from NCTS when it comes.
If it passes within 90 days of due date is not the issue here, the test has been expired for more than 90 days so the due date has passed.

In the interim here are some random ads from donedeal of cars with 6 month NCT certs.

How do the above ads prove they were issued with a 6 month cert at the time of passing??
