Joining Civil Service - Prebooked hols

I have been offered a job within the Civil Service in Dublin as an AO starting in March. However, I have already booked tickets for Japan in October, ages before the competition started for this role. Has anyone faced a similar situation. I dont like my first contact with HR being to book holidays before I have even started the role, but also the flights were extremely expensive and have coordinated the trip with other friends. How should I approach this , will they be understanding?

Shouldn't be a problem if already booked. Just come clean

You will be fine. Its not like its in your first few weeks after starting, its eight months later.

You will have accrued plenty of holiday entitlement at that stage. HR will probably ask you when you start if you have anything booked. They will not be surprised. If they dont ask, mention it .

You'll be grand, particularly if an AO.

Deffo tell them from the outset.

It’ll still be up to your new Section and Department whether you’ll be able to take the holidays but usually this kind of thing isn’t a problem... especially if your hols don’t coincide with mid-term.

It will be fine - how long is the holiday? If it is two weeks or less then it is not even a slight issue imo.

It's for the world cup. I have booked outgoing tickets but havent booked return tickets as I think we could pretty far :pac::pac:

It would be within annual leave etc. so on that isnt the problem and will be forced to pick a return date before I have this conversation with the future employers. I was just worried that this mightnt be look at favourably, but I think, folloiwngyour responses it should be sound! Thanks

If it helps, I started at the end of March and took nearly three weeks of holidays that June. It was fine (if borderline).

Don't worry they will be delighted you are using your holidays. Your AP will have absolutely no problem with this, seen this tons of times.

How soon is it ok to ask about taking holidays after you have started a new job?

As soon as possible so people know you won't be around.

Should you be in a job for an amount of time before you mention leave?

I took 10 days holidays starting on my start date as an AO. Had it booked in advance. There was no issue with HR or anyone else.

Edited to add - I brought it up with them as soon as they contacted me about my start date.

Literacy standards for AOs must have fallen drastically since the monochrome days when I served in the grade! :P

Seriously, well done for getting the job, and don't worry about the leave situation - the CS has managed to get along without you for the past century and it's very unlikely to grind to a sudden halt just because you're heading over to the land of the rising sun for a few weeks! Furthermore, with any luck you'll be on flexi-time so can work up a couple of days of extra leave, on top of your actual entitlement.

They're your holiday days to take whenever you want them

Also requires the approval of your employer to set agreed dates.

Which Department? If it's Finance or PER you could be leaving just at Budget time which could be tricky but they'll cope without you. Mention it your first day.
