Hospital advice

Hi all
I'm very new to all this and very overwhelmed. There is excitement don't get me wrong but a lot to take in.
Can anyone offer any advice between holles street and Rotunda. Maybe some pros and cons. I will more than likely go public as I was recommended by a mid wife friend.
I have had my doctors appointment and now need to make my first hospital appointment. It's early. I'm just 5 weeks 4 days but I'm anxious to make the appointment.
I'd appreciate any advice. Thanks in advance

Go where is handiest. You'll hear good and bad about both. I had my three in Holles Street, my sister chose the Rotunda. I didn't see much of a difference in care.

Yeah I was Rotunda.There is very little to chose between, you hear stories about all the hospitals.Where is practical for you to go?We are North county so Holles St would have meant driving past the Rotunda to get there which seemed completely ridiculous to me.We were very happy with the Rotunda anyway.

Thanks all. I'm live near Portobello so all would be pretty handy. I think I'd rather holles st or rotunda. Don't ask me why but I'm happy to have it narrowed down to two at least.
I guess holles street is maybe closer but the midwife I know is based in rotunda. While I know there is no guarantee she will be there it is something that has me swaying to there. Initially I had thought holles street as my partners daughter was born there but then when the girl i know mentioned she was in rotunda I started thinking that perhaps there would be better. I know both will be fine and i guess I'm making a bigger deal about this than is needed. For some reason im incredibly indecisive.

Ok, well I did know someone in the Rotunda and it was a huge help to me.In fact she was the reason I was picked up as a strep B carrier early in the first pregnancy.I had bleeds early in all three and she was in the Rotunda ER at the time of the first and yeah, It was a big comfort to have somebody there.Even somebody you could ask by message if you weren't sure about something-yeah, it's kind of a comfort alright.She wasn't the whole reason I chose the Rotunda but it was definitely a bonus.

Go with your gut on it, there’s not much between any of them! I had all 3 of mine in Holles Street and can’t fault them in the slightest. 3 great experiences. We live closer to The Coombe but went with Holles Street because my Mam had all of us there! Well the youngest was Mt Carmel. Sometimes it’s a little thing like that that’s the decider.

You’ll find negative stories about any of the maternity hospitals but the good always outweighs the bad.

If you live in Portobello would you consider the Coombe?
I have only found out since I am pregnant that if a child has any serious issues when born they are brought to the Coombe from any of the other hospitals.

I personally chose the Coombe as it is closest but after hearing that I am delighted as I think that is a nice comfort to have.

I have only been in once for first appointments but I was very impressed with the efficient way it is ran.
All my friends have had their kids there (and my mam had us) and no one has had any bad stories for me.

But I am sure all the maternity hospitals are great to be fair.

Who advised you on that out of interest? All 3 Dublin hospitals have a NICU so there’s generally no need to move them. My SIL had complications discovered during pregnancy in Cavan general in the last few months and was referred to a specialist in Holles Street for the birth.

All 3 Dublin maternity hospitals have neonatal intensive care units

Having had the experience....I can confirm that all three maternity hospitals have NICUs.And Temple St certainly seem to take babies born with longer term issue, as do Crumlin, from all three hospitals. I have never heard the Coombe being mentioned in that context.

Apologies I did not mean to upset anyone. I was not claiming there was no NICU in other maternity hospitals.
I have heard that from a number of people but I just looked on the Coombe website there and it is only a regional/national neonatal unit for certain premature babies and babies with certain ‘complex conditions’.

Ah no I doubt anyone was upset, just pointing out all the Dublin hospitals are the same when it comes to neonates. Holles Street has a very similar blurb on their own site as you’ve posted so it’s in relation to the hospitals outside of Dublin. We’re very lucky to have the services in Dublin that we do and the choice!

Completely agree - it seems some of the hospitals outside of Dublin don’t even offer the anomaly scan which is ridiculous. And some poor women have to wait 14-15 weeks for first scan and appointment. Not fair that we are all treated differently depending on where we are in the Country.

That is the case in all Dublin maternity hospitals. Just not to confuse anyone making a choice. They all have very high standard and specialised neonatal unit. Any issues that are not treatable in nicu will be referred to a children's hospital

The fact you live in Portobello it might be worth considering the Coombe. I had my daughter there in September and spent 8 nights there in total and I cannot fault the care we both received. I attended appointments at the midwife clinic in Tallaght where I live and it was great, seen on time at every appointment as a public patient.

Consider City Centre traffic and rush hour on the canal if you're in a hurry to get to hospital when the time comes, versus a quick spin down the South Circular Road to reach the Coombe.

I had my two in Holles St, while living along the canal at Ranelagh, and had a wonderful experience. Public clinic first time and Domino scheme second time (I cannot recommend the domino midwives enough... truly amazing people). It might not be up your street, but holles st is the only one of the three hospitals to offer a homebirth, if you're within their catchment area.

We have since moved, and I'm gutted that I'm outside of the domino scheme radius for when my next baby comes along!
