Dear oh dear. Just been informed by an relative that the computer system is down at all the dog tracks in Ireland. It's bedlam at Galway. Must be the same in Shelbourne. It's a goldmine for the on course bookies

Surely with the Celtic Tiger back they're all full of IT people on work nights out?

In Galway, there's a load of stag parties that are not impressed, and one or two on course bookies who are cleaning up. It's lashing rain mind, so the people queuing are getting wet

How’s it an advantage for the bookies. What computer system is it?

It’s the Tote that is down. The bookies don’t use that obviously. Most on-course bookies at greyhound tracks are as bent as a nine bob note. Great way to launder a bit of money.

People have to use the bookies instead of the tote.

Most people tend to bet on the tote because it’s handier.

The one that operates the Tote, ie where most of the ordinary folk place their bets. The bookies still use the 'biro and notebook'

And the serious gamblers never use the Tote, because winnings are not guaranteed

Eh, surely that's the case for gambling in general or am I missing something?

With regular gambling you can bet on set odds. The tote works on a pool system and the odds are dependent on the number of people who bet on the horse. You can't really tell what odds you'll get.

Winnings on the tote are calculated based on the total of bets placed on the race. The odds you see at the start are an approximation, you don't know how much you'll win til after the fact. You're betting against other gamblers rather than the bookie themselves.

    Statement from the IGB!

Tote operations at all greyhound tracks were down for a lengthy period this evening due to technical issues at the contracted service provider, Sportech in Bristol, UK.

Service issues were brought to Sportech’s attention prior to racing commencing at all IGB tracks this evening. Intermittent service was restored to a number of tracks after 8 pm but problems persisted until full service was restored at approx 10 pm.

The IGB is disappointed with the disruption in service and apologies to all patrons and customers at greyhound stadia and those utilising the Barking Buzz App betting facility.

The IGB will be taking matters up directly with Sportech regarding this unacceptable disruption to service.

    Actually winings are guaranteed.

Guaranteed that the total payout will always be less than the takings.
If the favourite wins then you get sweet FA.
The only way to win is to choose a combination that few others do.
