    Guys
I'm looking at a car for commute mainly.

It's 40 km each way on mainly open road into Killarney.

My road is about 600 m long with a rise of 170m , so fairly steep.
The result is that snow and ice could be a problem.
We've also a diesel AWD as a second car for my wife.

I'm looking for suggestions as to what I could get. Budget is about 10-15k the higher end of I get finance.

I don't have a charging unit at home but with the possibility of solar panels system and using the battery to charge at night EV is in my thinking as opposed to another diesel

    TIA

If you buy an EV then you’ll get the 600e grant for a home charge point. Get one fitted.

Unless the car is parked at home during the day, then the solar PV wont help.
Battery storage for PV systems tend to be in the 5kwh range. This will only be a quarter of the car battery, so don’t base the car purchase around this. (Assuming a Leag 24kwh, but if going bigger, then its less a %)

Do the sums based on fully charging overnight from the home charge point and compare that to your diesel costs and other associated loans to see if savings are to be made.

For 15k you could be able to pick up eGolf 2015. Would suit your requirements and a nice car to drive.

In terms of the snow, eGolf but should say all of these electric cars are driven in -25 etc temps all around the World. You can get any number of item to help get grip. Ireland is a day in the park compared to some conditions these cars are driven around in.

Ice is ice, any car/van etc will and can crash on it. A good set of winter tires will help.

If Solar PV then go Zappi, you are talking 1k for install if standard. So 400 after grant.

Your budget wil give you decent choice. Depends on your taste

Thanks for your advice. Car will be with me in work all day. I'd need to check if there is a local charge point.

I'm probably looking at 50€ in diesel a week. So 200 a month to go towards paying off a loan.

Solar PV at weekend so, even with night rate it will only cost abotu a euro or so. Service cost reduced, tax etc will all help. I would guess you dont have to use a toll?

30 Kwh Leaf sounds like it will be around this price, SVE spec with 6.6 Kw charger is the one to get.

Some on carzone with 50,000 Kms some more some less.
