The sad story of Franklin Pierce, the 14th President of the USA. A one term drunkard.

Pierce in his younger sober days was an accommpolised Army Officer and lawyer. But was always thought to be too fond of the jar

A terrible tragedy befell him when he was on his way to Washington to be inaugarated. His train derailed and his son was killed.

His wife wnt insane after this and Franklin took to the bottle.

His Presidency was a comedy, he was often found roaming the streets of DC with a bottle in hand . A complete joke.

After Buchanan defeated him he moved to Concord to drink himself to death. He died from liver failure 12yrs later and has a very ordinary grave stone in the local cemetery .

His desendant Barbara Pierce would later marry a man by the name of George HW Bush.

He still got a bedroom named after him in the Whitehouse.

That's a good trick! His descendant surly?

Interesting if totally irrelevant. You could have stuck it in the History forum, it's gone really quiet there unfortunately

apparently he's got unrelated balance problems, I'm not so sure.

Although he was UK Prime Minister and not the Soveirgn, apparently Winston Churchill was effectively a functioning alcoholic and largely directed his War cabinet whilst half cut on whiskey.

Even better he was a Minister for Finance without a bank account

The saddest thing about Pierce is that he could have been a great President of his time. He was a very capable man, the rising star of the Democratic Party.

It's just that his personal life went haywire as he entered office and his drink demons caught up with him.

What's the point of anything? AH should be a place for slightly wacky irreverent and interesting nonsense. There is only so much vile you can spew at ethnic minorities and welfare mother's.

He was a raging alcoholic before becoming president and has cut back on the drinking when he got married.

He wasn't full blown though until after he entered office.

He ceased to function after he was sworn in , his vice pres William Rufus DeVane King basically ran that administration.

Let's not forget the sesh legend Brian Cowen, who got so pissed he forgot to lock the front door and let the troika in.

Boris was a great character and kept a few drinking buddies on staff. When their health failed and liver and kidney clapped out they were allowed to go back to the Salt mines.

Trump is very much against addictive substances. His own alcohol and illegal drugs as his own brother died an addict. He even advises his children to stay away from alcohol, smoking and illegal drugs.

I am not defending the Brian Cowen by any manner or mean but the rot was well set in before the credit crash.

Did Cowen join government a week before the crash? I thought he was minister for finance before he got Bertie's job .

Nixon was infamous for self medicating his recurring depression with alcohol and sleeping pills. There's a story that following North Korea's shooting down of a spy plane in April 1969 with the death of 31 crewmen he ordered a nuclear strike. It was only Kissinger's intervention which prevented WW3. He spoke to the military and persuaded them to postpone the attack until the next day when Nixon had sobered up.

    Alexander the Great

Drank himself to death by age 32. Takes some serious drinking to do that

If he wasn’t born a prince he would have been the local drunk in the town

Yes but there were a lot more people involved than him. The bankers were completely feral. Where was the Financial regulator? When Bertie was Minister for Finance there was when the seeds were sat, or possibly further back than that. They just all came home to roost during Cowens reign of incompetency. Alot of dodgy American and Germany bonds were bought and sold as AAA that were CCC or BBB at best. The important thing is that the Pension fund managers got paid. Absolutely no accountability or consequences for the main players.

President of Ireland, Sean T O Kelly, was a dipso. He used to wander over to the American ambassadors residence to get himself invited in for a bevvy. He also sneaked out to the Hole in the Wall pub frequently.

    Drunkest President of all time:

    America: We had Franklin Pearse
England. Who? We had Winston Churchill
EU: He wasn't a president and cearly you've never met our Jean Claude Junker.
Russia Pah! He's not a real president. Anyway no one will ever beat Boris Yeltsin.
Ireland: Hold my drink. The "Cowen 2025" campaign starts here.
