Suggestions for something fun or different to replace current car

I have a E36 318is at the moment that's coming up on 3 years of ownership. I still love it but have an itch for something else lately.

I'm not sure what to look for my budget isn't massive, probably around the 3k mark with the possibility to stretch it slightly.

I'd like something a little fun with some poke, the BMW is nice in this regard but it's not that quick. I do about 10k a year, mostly weekly shipping runs and trips out of Dublin to the folks or weekends away. I find the E36 practical enough, big boot, plenty of room in the front (I don't use the back), so something reasonably similar with some compromise for the right car.

I've looked at a couple of mini cooper s on DD, quite like the idea of them, supposed to been fun and pretty quick. There's also the clubman (probably slow) , and the clubman s which I like, practical while still retaining the mini thing +fun?

Someone suggested a Clio 182 which I know nothing about other than they are fast. I prefer the newer shape but I've heard gearboxes are rubbish, and not in my budget really.

Besides that there's any amount of BMW's, I might confider are E46 320cd or a nice estate from BMW or Audi. So what's out there that won't let me down or cost an arm and a leg in maintenance or repairs that could be a good torment to my current BMW?
