Well M you could go really vintage and get a WW1 Trench watch from one of the still well known names and you'd get a pretty decent one for that money, but it wouldn't be waterproof and would be more delicate. Though on that score my daily driver for years was a 1916 example and never missed a beat, though I avoided water like the plague.

For fecks sake Mick. I ended up having a browse through the site looking at Seiko's and saw lots I'd love to buy. I think though after I get the one I said I'd buy from another user here, that I'll have to get this:

The seiko shippo enamel blue watches were amazing looking, but limited edition and about €1500.

You might find some enamel micro-brands and/or Chinese watches that are cheaper than the Seiko, but my typical fanboy answer is that Seiko are very often the best value for money.

Is it me or do the hands look wrong on that? The seconds hand is in dire need of a counterbalance and the hour and minute hands look like they came from two different watch designs. If I was looking at a vintage watch and saw that handset I'd pass on it figuring the hour hand was lost at some point and replaced.

Enamel dials today are rarely the quality of the ones of the past. Unless you go to crazy money one offs. Even among them you can often see a certain fuzziness to the printing, something that would generally only be seen with cheap end stuff of the past. The vast wealth of expertise and equipment seems to have been lost since the days when they were the go to material for dials and rattled out in their millions.

Here's a vid on making the Seiko dials I mentioned if anyone's interested. Skip into 1m30s if you want to skip male models wearing watches
